VERSA VILLA

Storytelling

The following statement may appear to be an exaggeration, but trust me it is not:

Paapa Versa is (arguably) the most talented musician I know. And I don’t make such statements carelessly. I know and have worked with countless musicians over the last decade, and almost none of them come close to the range of skillsets over which Paapa has very evident mastery.

Mastery, yes.

This man can produce, sing, rap, play multiple instruments, loop, record, dance and hold a high level conversation all while engaging an audience on stage live—LIVE!—without missing a single beat. The first time I witnessed him do this, my jaw remained permanently glued to the floor throughout the entire performance. What was most remarkable was the immaculate quality he retained with each aspect of his performance despite juggling a myriad things at once all by himself.

If that isn’t genius, I don’t know what is.

So when Paapa reached out to me for a collaboration on his 2023 album Versa Villa I jumped on the opportunity with all my limbs fully outstretched. It was a chance for me, a fan, to work with an artist whose work I have admired for over a decade. Interestingly, it wasn’t our first time trying to work together: our first attempt was for his 2017 tape Technical Difficulties, but due to some real life technical difficulties, that collaboration never actually materialized as we’d hoped. But because of the mutual respect we have for each other’s work and our determination to collaborate, we were both committed to making Versa Villa work, and that’s exactly what we did.
